The Pacific Northwest Gastroenterology Society (PNWGS) is an educational society representing a membership of over 200 gastroenterologists located primarily in Western Washington. The membership includes adult and pediatric gastroenterologists practicing in both academic and private arenas. In addition, surgeons and pathologists with an interest in gastrointestinal surgery and gastrointestinal pathology may participate. The Meet the Professor Evening Program offers several 90-minute dinner lectures with rotating topics focused on the latest updates and advances in research and improvement of patient care. The serie's lectures are given by invited local, national and international experts in different fields with a focus on clinical practice. Activities include review and critique of published journal articles, review of difficult or unusual problems for the practicing gastroenterologist, discussion of complications of procedures and other adverse events, and presentations of current research hypotheses, methods and results.

The Current Status of Healthcare Delivery in Hepatology

PNWGS will be pleased to welcome Dr. Jayant Talwalkar on March 7th. Dr. Talwalkar will be joining us from the Mayo Clinic where he is currently a Professor of Medicine and leads a research program that focuses on identifying novel strategies for diagnosing and treating patients with autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis, and primary sclerosing cholangitis.

Dr. Talwalkar received his undergraduate and medical school degrees at the University of Illinois followed by postgraduate training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He completed a gastroenterology fellowship at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and a Transplant Hepatology fellowship at the Mayo Clinic. Thereafter, he joined the staff at the Mayo Clinic in 2000 where he is currently Professor of Medicine. He has also served on the Test and Policy Committee for Transplant Hepatology with the American Board of Internal Medicine, and is the current Chair of the Practice Guidelines Committee for the AASLD.

Dr. Talwalkar's clinical interests include the diagnosis and management of cholestatic liver diseases while his research activities are focused on health services research pertaining to clinical hepatology. Work in these areas has been sponsored by research grants from the Center for Translational Science Activities, and the National Institutes of Health.
