About Our Patient Care Program
Our Division is deeply and passionately committed to the missions of academic medicine.
We provide the highest quality patient care for a wide spectrum of gastrointestinal and
liver diseases. The faculty in our five teaching hospitals possess both depth and
expertise in a variety of disorders, including AIDS, inflammatory bowel diseases, liver
transplantation, bone marrow transplantation, and cancer of the gastrointestinal tract.
Our many innovative and pioneering clinical research programs allow our patients to access
highly promising and exciting treatment protocols.
Our patient care program includes several major components. Gastrointestinal
pathology services assist patients and their physicians in the correct diagnosis of
GI symptoms; therapeutic endoscopy provides patients with avenues for treatment of
pre-cancerous bowel diseases; and our hepatology and liver transplant services provide
clinical services for patients with hepatitis and other chronic liver diseases.
Our faculty conduct research, perform and supervise clinical procedures, and see patients in
five area teaching hospitals.
Our gastroenterology and hepatology physicians at UW Medicine provide our patients
with the latest in medical discovery, diagnoses and treatments. Our physicians treat patients,
as well as conduct scientific research and teach the next generation of medical professionals
at the following core locations:
University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC)
Harborview Medical Center (HMC)
Gastroenterology at the Eastside Specialty Center
Our physicians also conduct research, perform & supervise clinical procedures, see patients,
and teach medical professionals at these additional sites.
Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC)
Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA)
VA Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS)
Pacific Medical Center (PacMed)
We believe that excellence in patient care includes a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach to diagnosing and treating digestive diseases and cancers. By bringing together a team of cross-disciplinary specialists to diagnose and treat a single problem, we eliminate the need for a patient to seek out separate opinions from various branches of medical sciences. Gastroenterologists, hepatologists, liver transplant surgeons, gastrointestinal tumor surgeons, gastrointestinal pathologists, and gastrointestinal radiologists all come together in a single session, in a single location, to discuss the correct diagnosis and best possible treatment plan for a patient. Through this process, the patient is offered a fully researched, definitive recommendation. We work very closely with specialists from the following:
Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC)
Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA)
Department of Surgery
Department of Surgery: Transplant Services
Department of Pathology
