Associate Professor & Director, Liver Care Line
Biography

Dr. Scott Biggins is an associate professor of the UW Division of Gastroenterology and director of the Liver Care Line for UW Medicine. He received his undergraduate degree in chemical engineering (bioengineering option) from the University of California, Los Angeles (1994) and his medical degree from the University of Southern California (1999). He completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University (2002) and his Gastroenterology fellowship training at the University of California, San Francisco (2005). He was also awarded a Masters degree in Clinical Research from the University of California, San Francisco (2005).

Dr. Biggins' clinical interests are the risk reduction and management of complications of end-stage liver disease, and the clinical evaluation and care of liver transplant candidates and recipients.

His research is focused on improving recipient selection for liver transplantation and revising organ allocation algorithms in order to maximize patient outcomes. His specific skill set includes epidemiology and health services research methods. In particular, Dr. Biggins is responsible for revising the original “MELD” score for liver organ allocation to include the serum sodium, which is now the standard of care for liver transplantation in the United States (and internationally).

He has published over 50 papers in peer-reviewed journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Liver Transplantation, 8 book chapters, and over 60 published abstracts.
